I’ve always been the kind of person who needed to understand how things worked. That started early. I was reading by the age of six, and by seven I was building Radio Shack electronics kits on the living room floor, fascinated by the idea that a handful of components could become something alive with electricity. My father was the one who taught me the mechanical side of the world — engines, tools, repairs, the quiet logic of how physical things fit together. I was always at his elbow, watching, learning, asking questions. That curiosity became the foundation for everything that came later.
I didn’t follow a straight path. I held more jobs before adulthood than most people do in a lifetime. I delivered groceries from age six to nine. I tried picking strawberries for a day — one day — before realizing that being tall and picking berries is a terrible combination. Thankfully, my boss noticed I had the gift of gab, so I spent the next couple of summers selling strawberries and raspberries at the biggest stand on Bainbridge Island.
From there, I worked in residential and commercial construction, turned wrenches as a Chevy mechanic, drove a taxi, installed cable TV, ran a telecommunications business, managed a restaurant, worked as a bouncer, bartender, waiter, and dishwasher, drove a tow truck, served a year as a reserve federal enforcement officer for the Point No Point Council, baked professionally, and even owned a dive shop. Every job taught me something different — how to talk to people, how to stay calm, how to improvise, how to fix what’s in front of me with whatever tools I have.
All of that set the stage for the next major chapter of my life: the U.S. Marine Corps. I spent four exceptional years there, trained in electronics and specialized weapons systems including the TOW anti‑tank missile system, infrared imaging equipment, and surface‑to‑air missile platforms. The Marines sharpened my discipline, my precision, and my ability to solve problems under pressure. They also reinforced something I’d learned from my father: reliability isn’t optional. It’s a way of life.
Those experiences — childhood curiosity, my father’s mentorship, the patchwork of jobs, and the Marine Corps — shaped me into a well‑rounded, adaptable, hands‑on problem solver. And that’s exactly the person I became at Microsoft Research, where I spent more than 18 years building, fixing, designing, and supporting hardware systems for cutting‑edge research. I ran labs, kept equipment alive, designed mechanical assemblies, machined parts, welded structures, built prototypes, and supported projects that stretched across cities, clinics, and research groups. My job was to make sure ideas could become real — and stay running.
But the most meaningful part of my life isn’t professional.
It’s personal.
Over 16 years ago, I met my wife Melody while hiking in the Cascade Mountains. For me, it was love at first sight. Melody is from Danshui (Tamsui), Taiwan, and being with her has opened my life to new cultures, new perspectives, and a deeper understanding of what matters. Our relationship has been built on curiosity, kindness, and shared adventure. She’s the center of my world and the best part of every day.
I’ve started a new job — really, a new passion — that brought back something I hadn’t felt in a long time: the excitement of Monday morning. I love what I do, and I’m grateful every day for the opportunities I’ve been able to grasp. After a lifetime of curiosity, hard work, and hands‑on problem solving, it feels good to wake up energized, knowing I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be.
Today, I still build, fix, design, and create. I still love solving problems that don’t have obvious answers. But I also value the quieter parts of life — time with Melody, time outdoors, time working on projects that matter to people.
